Public Sector Equality Duty
Our Commitment to Equality
At Hudson Primary School, we are committed to creating an inclusive school community where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and fairness, and everyone experiences excellence.
We recognise and celebrate the individuality of every child, family and member of staff. We work to ensure that no one is disadvantaged because of who they are or because of a protected characteristic.
As a school, we have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to have due regard to the need to:
-
eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation;
-
advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not; and
-
foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
The protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010 are:
age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Our commitment to equality applies across school life, including admissions, teaching and learning, behaviour, SEND provision, access to activities and enrichment, recruitment, employment, school trips and the wider opportunities available to our children.
Our Equality Principles
At Hudson, we:
-
Treat every member of our school community with dignity, respect and fairness.
-
Recognise and celebrate individual strengths, identities, cultures, backgrounds and experiences.
-
Have high expectations for every child and seek to remove barriers that may prevent them from achieving their potential.
-
Provide an inclusive curriculum that reflects and respects the diversity of our society.
-
Make reasonable adjustments where appropriate to ensure disabled pupils can access education and participate fully in school life.
-
Challenge discriminatory language, behaviour, prejudice and stereotyping.
-
Promote positive relationships and understanding between different groups within our school and wider community.
-
Listen to the views and experiences of children, families and staff.
-
Use information and evidence to identify where inequalities may exist and consider appropriate action.
-
Ensure that equality is considered when developing policies, making decisions and planning school improvement.
Equality in the Curriculum
Equality and inclusion are embedded throughout our curriculum and wider school experience.
We aim for children to see themselves and their communities represented positively within books, teaching resources, displays and learning experiences, while also developing their understanding of people whose experiences may be different from their own.
Through our curriculum, PSHE, assemblies, relationships education and wider enrichment opportunities, pupils are encouraged to:
-
respect difference;
-
challenge stereotypes and prejudice;
-
understand fairness and equality;
-
develop empathy and compassion;
-
value different cultures, beliefs, backgrounds and identities; and
-
contribute positively to their school and wider community.
Discriminatory or prejudicial behaviour is not accepted at Hudson. Where concerns arise, they are addressed in line with our safeguarding, behaviour and other relevant school procedures.
Equality Objectives
Our equality objectives identify the areas where we will focus our efforts to further promote equality and reduce barriers to participation and achievement.
Our current objectives include:
1. Inclusive achievement
To continue to identify and reduce barriers to achievement for pupils from groups who may experience disadvantage, including pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, ensuring that high expectations and appropriate support enable every child to make progress.
2. Inclusion and participation
To ensure that pupils with different needs, backgrounds and protected characteristics have meaningful opportunities to participate in the full life of the school, including enrichment, trips, clubs, leadership and wider community activities.
3. Representation and understanding
To continue developing a curriculum and wider school environment that reflects the diversity of our community and enables pupils to understand, respect and celebrate difference.
4. Belonging and wellbeing
To promote a school culture in which every child feels safe, respected, included and able to be themselves, while actively challenging prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes.
Our equality objectives are reviewed regularly and form part of our wider school improvement planning.
Working Together
Equality is not the responsibility of one individual or one team. It is a shared responsibility across our whole school community.
We expect all members of the Hudson community to be Ready, Respectful and Safe, and to contribute to an environment in which everyone can learn, participate and thrive.
Our aim is simple: to remove barriers, celebrate difference and ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience excellence.
